FAQ About Squires

1. What is Squires? Starting in Washington State in the 1990s, Squires is a DeMolay sponsored programs for young men ages 7-11 that offers them a sampling of the values and traditions of DeMolay.  It provides age level appropriate programming that helps to provide them critical lessons and learning skills.

2. Why is New York DeMolay launching a Squires Program?  Each year we have interest from parents of young men who are less than 12 years old that are looking for a program like DeMolay.   Other questions are from parents of active DeMolays who have siblings too young to participate, but are in the age range the Squire Program includes.  This addresses an unmet need in our communities. At the same time, COVID19 has changed the landscape of youth activities with many programs like youth sports not being able to occur. This will provide a way to have positive social experiences.

3. What does the program look like?  Squires will be currently offered at large as a virtual program in line necessary items to enjoy the experience.  The guide contains ideas and each month there will be a different challenge for the young men to complete that will help them earn awards and progress through squires.

4.  How does a Chapter Apply for a Squires Manor? Chapters may elect to have an in-person Squires Manor if they have the interest of five young men in the age group, three designated adult volunteers to work with the program, a program proposal written, and a petition for squires.

5.  What happens if no chapter exists in the surrounding community, can the youth from that area still participate?  Absolutely.  A recognized Masonic Organization can contact the coordinator for the Squire program to obtain information necessary and become a part of the Squire at large group.  The requirements from Question 4 will apply.

6. What is the expectation of parental involvement?  We encourage parents to be supportive of their youth, for in person meetings we would like parents to be around to help and support.  And we would greatly appreciate parental involvement during the virtual component of the program. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend any activity their squire is attending.

7. Youth Protection: Any and all advisors working with squires will be subject to a background check which is the same requirement for adults working with a DeMolay chapter and in compliance with the standards set forth by DeMolay International.

8. What does it cost? Joining Squires costs $18 per young man. Local Manors may charge an additional fee as per their manor bylaws.
